Detailed Observing Log Document
The Detailed Observing Log document allows you to search the Observing Log by using a variety of criteria, and then produce a text report.
Detailed Observing Log documents are compatible with Brief Observing Log documents; both have file extension logqry. The Brief Observing Log document displays report data in a tabular style and is more customizable than the detailed format. The detailed format requires a lot of screen area to display.
Information about the Observing Log Report
The document contains two adjustable panes. The upper pane allows you to specify the search criteria, and the lower pane displays the resulting report.
Document Settings Pane
Document settings are grouped logically into 6 tabbed pages. When a filter tab has at least one filter set that excludes any observations from a report, the tab area shows the filtered icon. This helps you identify at a glance any filter settings that are applied when the database is searched.
Quick links to the tabs follow:
Report Pane
Search initiates the search and ultimately produces a report.
Clear allows you to erase the report text. Report text is automatically erased before a new report is created.
Restore Image/Notes restores the size of the image and notes panes to their default width.
Help allows you to open online help to this topic.
A recessed status box appears beside the Help button. It shows the number of observations included in the search result. If the text in the status box is grayed then the settings in the document have been changed and the report has not been refreshed by Search.
Detailed Observing Log Report contains the report text that results from the most recent search. Click here to see a description of the report.
The report pane is divided into 3 sections. The upper section contains all of the report text, except the Notes. The bottom of the report is divided into an Image display section on the left and the Notes section on the right. There is a resizing bar between the Image and Notes section that you can move to suit your needs.
Only one observation is shown in the report pane at a time; use the buttons at the bottom right of the document window to scroll to the next observation, last observation, etc.
The report window has a context menu that can be accessed by right-clicking in the window. The context menu contains:
▪the designation of the object
▪all project names that contain observations of the object (if any). The project icon indicates a project name to which the observation belongs.
▪all common names associated with the object that appear in the deep-sky or stellar catalogs (if any). The information icon indicates a common name for the object.
▪all cross references associated with the object that appear in the deep-sky or stellar catalogs (if any). The live lookup icon indicates that you can lookup and view essential catalog information for the cross referenced object by clicking the menu item.
▪View Observation opens the selected observation in the Observation Editor but does not allow changes
▪View Images opens the images attached to the selected observation (if any) in a viewing window
