NED Lookup

NED Lookup allows you to search the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) service for an object, and retrieve information about it. When NED Lookup is opened, the user-entered designation of the object in the Observing Plan Object Editor is submitted to NED.

If there is no designation, or if you want to search for a different designation, enter it into Object Desig and click Lookup to perform a new search.

Search Results

The lower left window pane contains the data returned by NED as it is parsed by Deep-Sky Planner. The right side holds the raw data returned by NED. The raw data is included for completeness.

Important:

▪An Internet connection is required for this feature.

▪'Invalid response' is shown in the lower left pane if the object designation is not found in NED, or an object is found with no position information.

▪Common names for the object are included in the search results. These names are prioritized according to catalogs contained in Deep-Sky Planner, and only the top four matches are included in the results returned to the Observing Plan Object Editor.

OK closes NED Lookup and returns the object information to the Observing Plan Object Editor.

Cancel closes NED Lookup without changing the object information in the Observing Plan Object Editor.
