Simbad Lookup
Simbad Lookup allows you to search the SIMBAD astronomical database service at the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg for an object, and retrieve information about it. When Simbad Lookup is opened, the user-entered designation of the object in the Observing Plan Object Editor is submitted to Simbad.
If there is no designation, or if you want to search for a different designation, enter it into Object Desig. and click Lookup to perform a new search of Simbad.
Search Results
The lower left window pane contains the data returned by Simbad as it is parsed by Deep-Sky Planner. The right side holds the raw data returned by Simbad. The raw data is included for completeness.
Important:
▪An Internet connection is required for this feature.
▪'Invalid response' is shown in the lower left pane if the object designation is not found in Simbad, or an object is found with no position information.
▪Looking up a double star typically returns data for a single component rather than a pair. If you search for a double star pair and no data is found, try searching for a single component.
▪Common names for the object are included in the search results. These names are prioritized according to catalogs contained in Deep-Sky Planner, and only the top four matches are included in the results.
OK closes Simbad Lookup and returns the object information to the Observing Plan Object Editor.
Cancel closes Simbad Lookup without changing the object information in the Observing Plan Object Editor.
