Installation Help

Before Installation

Before you install Deep-Sky Planner you should:

Running versions 5 and 6 side-by-side

You may run Deep-Sky Planner 5 and 6 on the same computer. Knightware recommends that you backup your settings and user data in version 5 and restore them into version 6. The procedure is described below.

User Account Control and Account Privileges

Deep-Sky Planner 6 is designed to run under a Windows user account having standard or administrative privileges, and with User Account Control (UAC) enabled. Microsoft recommends that users of Vista or later perform everyday tasks running under an account with standard privileges to assure a "more secure user experience." Deep-Sky Planner meets that requirement.

Deep-Sky Planner 6 installation and product activation require administrative privileges. This can be achieved by running the installer and activator under an administrative account, or by running from a standard account using "Run as Administrator." The installer automatically tries to elevate privileges. Knightware does not recommend installing under the Guest account.

Install for Just Me or All Users?

Deep-Sky Planner 6 can be installed for Just Me (Install just for me) or for All Users (Install for anyone using this computer). Knightware recommends that you install for Just Me in most cases. Please note that regardless of whether Deep-Sky Planner 6 is installed for All Users or Just Me, the product can be used in a Windows account with standard or administrative privileges.

Installing for Just Me places a database and other user files in folders accessible by the current user (beneath \Users\<user>\Documents or <user>\My Documents.) One copy of program files is placed in folders accessible by the current user only (beneath \Users\<user>\AppData\Local1 or \Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data.

  • You do not need administrative privileges to enter a Product Key or to apply software updates.
  • You must have adminstrative privileges to install and activate the license.

Separate copies of Deep-Sky Planner 6 can be installed for multiple users using the Just Me type of installation for each user account. An entire copy of the product (code and data) is installed for, and is accessible by, each the account(s) for which the product is installed. This allows separate databases to be used by one or more users, and it assures that product code and files are maintained at the same revision level. This method requires that each installation be maintained (installed and updated) separately and administrative privileges are not required.

Installing for All Users places a database and other user files in folders accessible by any user of the computer (beneath Public\Documents or Shared Documents.) One copy of program files is placed in folders accessible by any user (beneath Program Files.)

  • You must have administrative privileges to enter a Product Key and to apply software updates.
  • You must have adminstrative privileges to install and activate the license.
